The OSI Model - What is it?
The laypersons introduction to the OSI model. The Model is a description of the different layers over which electronic devices can communicate. There are 7 layers in this model ranging from layer 1 which handles the physical equipment used in device communications up through layer 7, which handles how an application of software program will communicate.
The 7 layers are: 7 - The Application Layer 6 - The Presentation Layer 5 - The Session Layer 4 - The Transport Layer 3 - The Network Layer 2 - The Data Link Layer 1 - The Physical Layer The Graphic below also gives a representation of the 7 layers.
Any given layer handles communication between the layer above it and the layer below it. For example, layer three communications, which is the network layer, can build communications from layer two for movement into layer four or it can break down layer four communication for movement into layer two. This model helps to define how a click on the send button at layer 7 is converted to 0’s and 1’s at layer 1. A basic understanding of the 7 layer model will help you in the more advanced levels of understanding routers and switches. It will also help you prepare for the ABII and/or PARCA exams.
